Just wondered if anybody new much about the JD 4010 model.
I've found a used JD 2003 4010 for $5500. It's got 587 hours on it. 18 hp, diesel, hydrostatic. Is this a good deal?

I think you can find a bigger machine and less hours for a few dollars more IMO....I would look at models such as 4100, 4110, or maybe 4115 There are many good condition low hour machines looking for a new home ;) ....

I would have to agree that a if you are going to buy a tractor, I'd look for something a little bigger. When I bought my first compact the JD dealer brought a 4000 Hydro with a 48inch rear mount finish mower down for me to try out. The poor little thing had an awfull time climbing any kind of grade with the mower cutting grass, it just ran out of power, so that's when I bought my first 4300, more money but it was so much more capable. Since the 4300 I've had my current 4310 and had a 4410 for a while that I later sold. All were great tractors. Frank. ....

We've got almost 5 acres. It's all pretty flat with not much grade to it. Do you think a bigger tractor would be too much? ....

I got to thinking about the 5500. price tag. We have a couple 345 JD rider mowers and I've noticed that the dealers still are asking 4-5000.00 for them, so in that sense the 5500. seems like a good deal, 500 hours is a long way from worn out providing it had a good home up till now. When I thout bigger might be better, if this is your first tractor, you will get the "Fever" after you have it a while and will want a loader, tiller, box blade, etc. that a bigger tractor would handle much better. Back to your question on mowing 5 acres of flat lawn, yes it will do fine and might be a lower cost way to see if you really like tractoring, it can always be traded in later for a bigger one. Happy shopping. Frank. ....

I had a 750 as my first compact, but 30 acres. It was not really big enough for some of the tasks. I traded it for the 955. I would think it would be a fairly good deal and able to do most tasks on 5 acres. A couple of HP would be better.
I would make sure you are not leaving any money on the table. Personally I have always been able to get my money back out of the tractor and if you decide to trade up it is nice to recoup all your money. ....
